The opposition Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) is seeking majority control of the House of Representatives to protect party leader Senator George Weah should he is elected President.
CDC Montserrado County (District # 8) Representative and candidate Acarous Moses Gray said Friday, September 23, his party wants to produce the Speaker and Deputy Speaker and are asking voters to give them the legislature.
Speaking in the Jorkpen Town Community when dedicating a refurbish public latrine, Gray said “we want to capture the speaker and deputy speakership of the 54th legislature to be able to protect the programs and policies of the presidency.”
“We have been educating our people how to vote in these elections and we are also encouraging them that the CDC needs not less than 38 representatives to produce the speaker and deputy to take over the House’s leadership.”
“If we cannot produce the speaker and deputy, the president will have tough time dealing with the legislature. We want to protect the programs and policies of the presidency and to protect the presidency is to grab the first branch of government.”
The opposition CDC currently has 10 lawmakers out of 73 in the House of Representatives who are seeking reelections in the ensuing October polls.
“Already in the senate we only have three out of 30 senators. So, in the House of Representatives we need to ensure that we have 38 persons; we don’t have the majority [but] with the CDC in partnership with the coalition and with our own people we will be able to protect our own.”
