Senate Prepares For Ja’neh’s Impeachment Trial

As recommended by its leadership, the Senate plenary session has ordered its Judiciary Committee to prescribe the rules and procedures for the impeachment trial of Associate Justice Kabineh Ja’neh.

An expanded Judicial Committee will report in one week ending August 11 with matrix of activities including timelines for the trial of the impeachment, the Senators have agreed.

Reviewing the Senate’s rules on impeachment to complement it with other rules and procedures to ensure adherence to the constitutional principle of due process is also part of the Judiciary Committee’s terms of reference.

The House of Representatives on August 27 adapted a bill of impeachment against Justice Ja’neh for alleged theft of property, perjury, fraud and corruption.

Some Senators upon receipt of the House’s notice of impeachment cited procedure errors in its transmission.

But its leadership said in a report Tuesday the Senate has no authority to interpose an objection and that the Senate should proceed “ with the prescription of its own procedure to try the impeachment.
